ABOUT THE CANDIDATE
Hi there! This is Shawn Xu. Have you ever wondered what makes a
good Student Body President? From my perspective, a good SBP
should fully embrace the idea of inclusivity. No groups of people
should be left out, and all voices from the student body should be
heard.
MY ROLE IN OUR COMMUNITY
Hi there! This is Shawn Xu. Have you ever got a chance to talk to
me? Quoting from my friends, I am a caring and community-oriented
person. Whenever I am eating my meals, I try to always briefly check
in with everyone at the table and make sure they are included in the
conversation. Whenever a roommate issue is raised to me on E3, I
try to always sit down and patiently hear the voices from both sides
as a Lead Prefect. Whenever people stop me in the hallway and ask
me about what’s coming up this weekend and add their suggestions,
I try to always pause what I’m doing and bring up their suggestions
to the Weekend Program Team. Whenever a student fills out the
Peer Tutor Request Form, I try to always carefully look at their
specific requests, such as the different genders of tutors they want
to work with, and send a follow-up email ASAP.
LEADERSHIP STYLE
Not afraid to speak up when I disagree…
Sometimes students will feel frustrated with the new policies, but I won’t
be afraid to speak up for our student body. For example, the recent
locking-your-door policy is not popular among students. During a dorm
reflection, I stepped out to advocate for our conveniences. Many E3
friends identified with me and expressed their frustrations. All the
leadership roles I had before required me to work with faculty, and you
can rely on me to communicate with faulty effectively to meet our needs!
ENVISION
Fostering an inclusive environment
I want to create a more inclusive environment at Westtown by
- having more cross-dorm activities, such as open dorms
- encouraging international/local students to speak their mother
- language at certain events
- decorating for major global festivals, such as Lunar New Year
- inviting day students to participate into weekend programs
- reopening Belfry, which can be used as affinity groups’ meeting space
